I ordered take out from Eat Like Home today and it is my first experience eating African food as a Caucasian European woman that has very little knowledge of West African culture and food in general. First of all, I would like to say that it is refreshing to have something available on Uber Eats that is NOT fast food but actual home made cuisine. I wish more restaurants other than fast food would get on it. I was really intrigued by the "foutou" because it was the only thing I saw a couple time on tv on rare occasions and have never seen anything similar to it. I would have thought that it would have a harder texture but actually the texture is more like an " after rest dough" with a touch of sweetness. I really love the simple and subtle taste of foutu, which I ordered with " sauce graine bœuf " , the beef was absolutely delicious, melting in my mouth and the sauce had a nice silky texture with lots of African flavor/spices. I also ordered thiep rice, because I wanted another option in case I didn’t like Foutou, the rice cooking is my favorite type: bouncy and a bit crispy on the outside with, again, lots of flavor. I also ordered alloco for appetizer, I tried plantain before with Latin food but never with African food, I love the texture, it’s a bit crispy on the outside and melting in your mouth in the inside. I ordered all of their sauces choices because I wanted to try them all, I am glad that the spicy ones ARE actually spicy (we all know that in France when they say it’s spicy it’s in 99% of case not even spicy). I gotta say, I don’t have a sweet tooth and I usually never order dessert but decided to go all in and give it a try for something sweet and I ordered the thiopathi beignet and OH MY GOD!!! Just the smell when I opened the box!!! UNBELIEVABLE! It is one of the best beignet I have ever tried, the texture is crispy and it is a bit closer to a warm bread than an actual very airy classic beignet but the spices they put in these beignet is out of this world! I highly highly recommend you to order these and it entered in my top list of favorite desserts. African food is so underrated and today I was remembered of it. I don’t know if it’s because of the unknown which makes it intimidating for a white person to approach it, but I want to especially thank Eat Like Home to make African food more approachable to foreigner by using social medias and showing how the food look like and its making process via their Instagram. It helped me understand a bit of which dish would most likely be my thing or not, and it peaked my curiosity. If you are in Toulon or visiting, please do not hesitate to give this restaurant a try, because it is 100% worth it!
